Review:
Small town romance featuring a witch who is estranged from her sisters returning home after ten years to face both her family and her best friend/crush she left behind. Scarlett Melrose receives a call from her estranged sister telling her to come home to Oak Haven because magic has gone awry. Scarlett left 10 years ago and never looked back after an incident that caused their father to pass away and Scarlett blamed herself ever since then. Scarlett is scared to face both her family and her old flame/friend, Nate. Yet when her spell to fix everything goes wrong its up to Scarlett to finally face the magical mess and try and make it work this time. This was a super slow burn small town witchy romance. I would say for me it just felt too slow burn and a bit too slow for my liking. The story never really felt like it was moving and the actual book felt like it was dragging for the most part. The romance is suppose to be slow burn but feels nonexistent at this point. I really wish I could like this more but it felt like a miss for me. If you like super slow burn small town witchy romances definitely give it a go, maybe you'll have a better time with it than I did.

Melanie Hall Murder
A Cold Case from Bath UK
This is a case that my team are currently reviewing in hope that we can put out a documentary about it. This murder seems to have been committed in 1996 but the victim’s remains were not found until 2009. This murder has to date never been solved.
This is one case that we as a team believe can be solved and in fact, should have been solved a long time ago.
Melanie Hall was born on August 20th 1970 and disappeared on June 9th 1996 after a night out at the Cadillacs Nightclub in Bath, UK.
Melanie had graduated from from the University of Bath in in 1995 having achieved a degree in nursing. She went on to get work as a clerical officer at The Royal university Hospital in Bath.
On 8th June 1996 Melanie had made arrangements for an evening out with her boyfriend Philip Karlbaum and then spent the night at his home afterwards. Her mother dropped her off at Philip’s home amd it was from there that they set out with another couple to Cadillacs nightclub in Bath city centre.
During the course of the evening Philip apparently saw 25-year-old Melanie dancing with another male and as a result an argument ensued. He left the club upset and headed home. She was last seen sitting on a barstool at 1.10 am in the early hours of June 9th 1996.
There was an unconfirmed sighting of a woman arguing with a man between 1.45am and 2am on Old Orchard just around the corner from the nightclub. Whilst police say that they cannot rule out that the woman was Melanie but at the same time there is no way to confirm that it was her.
There is also a report of a male seen talking to a woman matching Melanie Hall’s inside the nightclub. He was described as white, around 27 years old, 5ft 10ins tall, medium build, dark brown hair, dark brown eyes, bushy eyebrows and clean shaven.
His clothes were described as black trousers, black shoes with a brown silk shirt. The person who gave the description could not be certain but it seems quite possible the male had a gold hooped earring in his right ear and a flashy gold watch on his wrist.
Despite a massive police operation Melanie was not found and she was declared legally dead by a court on November 17th 2004 but without her body being found
Now before we go any further it is right to day that it has been suggested that a serial sex offender who preyed on women in the Bath area between 1991 and 2000 could potentially have been responsible for Melanie’s disappearance and death but thus far this has never been confirmed.
Officers from Avon & Somerset Police have said that they cannot rule out that the ‘Batman rapist’ was responsible for Melanie’s murder. The rapist is known to have attempted to carjack a woman at knifepoint in the same area of Bath as the club where Melanie was last seen just a few hours before Melanie is believed to have been abducted.
The victim of the attempted carjacking was left wouded when she fought her attacker but managed to escape.
Coming back to Melanie Hall’s murder the night of her disappearance is a night that may stick in some people’s memory as it was the evening of the opening game of the Euro 96 football championships, England played Switzerland and drew 1–1.
Melanie was wearing quite distinctive clothes and shoes on the night that she disappeared namely a pale blue silk dress with a round neck, black suede mule shoes with straps across the front and an open toe, size 5 or 6, a cream single-breasted, long-sleeved jacket and a black satchel-type handbag. Her jewellery consisted of a Next watch with expanding bracelet and silver drop earrings.
She was also known to have had her Midland bank cheque book and cheque guarantee card with were in her handbag and have never been recovered.
Maybe you were in the club that night? Did you speak to or recognise Malanie Hall? She was a very pretty young lady with very distinctive blonde hair. Were you a can driver in Bath in 1996? Did you take Melanie and a male somewhere in the early hours of June 9th 1996?
Were you offered the items of jewellery to purchase? or even the high quality handbag?
If you know anything at all that could lead police to solve this heinous crime, please contact the police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
If you are willing to discuss the case were a friend or colleague of Melanie and would be willing to speak to one of my research team then please get in touch.

Welcome to my 2024 sabbatical travels blog
Hello and welcome!
Every five years at my day job, we get a 3-month, fully paid sabbatical. I'm extremely blessed by this benefit, and spent years leading up to it considering what I wanted to do. I knew I wanted to travel, and I settled on (and saved up for) a trip all over the UK and Ireland. I'd never been, and was very keen to visit some of the countries my ancestors hailed from. I spent two of my three months' sabbatical just traveling around, and it was awesome.
Here's where I went, with links to the accompanying blog posts for each destination:
June 17-26: London (Part 1, Part 2)
June 26-29: Stratford-Upon-Avon
June 29-July 1: Nottingham/Long Eaton
July 1-4: Manchester (Part 1)
July 4-6: York
July 7: Sheffield
July 8-11: Manchester (Part 2)
July 11-19: Ireland (staying in Kilarney) (Part 1, Part 2)
July 19-26: Cardiff
July 26-28: Angelsey Island
July 28-29: Gladstone's Library in Hawarden, Wales
July 29-Aug. 4: Glastonbury (Goddess Conference)
Aug. 4-14: Glasgow
I set myself a couple ground rules before I went. I knew I wanted - and desperately needed - time to unplug and disconnect. I've been deep into social media, personally and professionally, since 2007, and I was way overdue for a break. So I stepped back from all my social accounts for the duration of the sabbatical (not counting creating this blog after I returned from my travels but before I returned to work). I didn't post a thing while I traveled and didn't check my accounts.
I also wanted to give myself every opportunity to be fully present for all I was experiencing, so I set myself a limit of only keeping 5 photos per day. I could take as many as I liked, but at the end of each day, I had to whittle it down to 5. This kept me focused on experiencing more than capturing the trip, something I haven't been very good about in the past.
I spent part of every evening journaling about what I did that day in an app, and every Sunday I hand-wrote a summary of the week's highlights, things I learned, and what I read that week.
A softer goal with no specific number attached was that I wanted to read as many books as I could during my sabbatical, particularly novels. I never seem to have enough time or space to read as much as I'd like in my day-to-day life.
And a fun goal was to try as many of the foods as possible from The Great British Bake-Off that I'd never tried before. (I only succeeded at a few.)
I learned a lot during this trip, and thoroughly enjoyed it. I hope you enjoy reading my recap.

DANCE WITH THE DEAD (Book #1)
From the age of eight, I've seen ghosts, with Petra Shearwater being my constant companion for thirty-four years. As a mystery novelist in need of a fresh start after a lackluster fifteen-year relationship, I return to Morley-on-Avon, the English town that fascinated me.
At forty-two, I seek a new beginning, a new book, and possibly new love, particularly with the local blacksmith, Leo. However, the cottage I move into, Bluebells, holds a haunting secret—Victoria Willis, a ghost who hints at a suspicious death, challenging the locals' belief that it was an accident.
DEAD AND GONE (Book #2)
Waking up with a potential killer sends me into panic mode. Bastian, the suspect, complicates things. Despite clues pointing to him, I can't dismiss his innocence. Determined to unveil Victoria's killer, I navigate breaking and entering, police evasion, and an unexpected encounter with Leo's wife.
DEAD OF NIGHT (Book #3)
Breaking into Chambon Hall leads to unexpected chaos when Bastian returns early. Now hiding in his house, the police come knocking, accusing Bastian of murder. Convinced of his innocence, I embark on a personal mission to uncover the truth. Little do I know, solving the mystery might make me the next victim.
LEFT FOR DEAD (Book #4)
Solving one murder doesn't grant me peace in Morley-on-Avon. Two men vie for my attention—Leo, the kindhearted blacksmith, and Bastian, the lothario playboy. Balancing between them becomes impossible. A new ghostly mystery unfolds with a young man missing, and a Regency-dressed ghost appears, hinting at a larger conspiracy.
DEAD RECKONING (Book #5)
As two men compete for my attention, a missing person case arises. Hugo, an antique shop employee, disappears, and Fiona suspects foul play. Investigating with my ghostly friend, Petra, uncovers a potential culprit close to home. Inspector Lean, less than thrilled, complicates matters, putting me in the midst of yet another Morley mystery.
WAKE THE DEAD (Book #6)
The circus arrives, bringing a new mystery. The ringmaster dies mysteriously during a cannon stunt. Now, with Petra and circus ghosts, I must unravel the truth. Inspector Lean questions my every move, and Bastian's presence complicates my budding relationship with Leo. Amidst circus murders and two determined men, solving mysteries never felt more challenging.

Every Haunting in Bristol You Need to Know About
When it comes to haunted locations, you need to stick to a few simple – albeit, rather traumatic – conditions: it needs to be old, and it needs to be drenched in death.
And that’s why most historic places in the UK have been stamped with ‘Haunted’ by travel guides and ghost hunters alike. Sure, it’s a marketing go-to to draw in crowds of kids, their disinterested parents, and fellow sceptics, but the unsuspecting city of Bristol has a lot more to support its claims than having a few basic bitch ghosts wandering down its streets.
It actually has all of the stereotypical hauntings and the real ghost stories that you can possibly cram into the HMV horror section; asylums, theatres, pubs.
And it all starts 1019 years ago.
In the year 1000 Bristol was founded, and 20 years later, it began trading. And it is this trading role – particularly the docks and the River Avon – which made it the prominent city that it still is today. This also shipped in the paranormal that we celebrate.
From the 13th century to the 18th century, Bristol was one of the top 4 wealthiest cities in England, fulfilling the prowess it still maintains, and even now it has the 10th largest city population in England.
Yet even before the middle ages, its history left many intricate traces in the corners of the city: Iron Age hill forts and the odd Roman Villa were built near the River Avon, and have undoubtedly helped fulfil the conditions needed for a haunted location.
But what about being drenched with death? Well, thanks to British History, this is not a difficult condition to meet.
It turns out that Bristol was one of the first locations for the voyages to the New World, and in the 18th and 19th centuries, half a million Africans were sent to the Americans as slaves from this city.
Yet even on top of this it has witnessed further wickedness of its past.
And it is this which puts the paranormal in this place.
Bristol’s Pubs
With every haunted location comes the token haunted pub. Maybe a beer glass goes missing now and then, perhaps a shadowy figure is seen lingering outside?
If it’s haunted, it’s here.
Home to one of the oldest coaching inns in the UK, Bristol’s Rummer Hotel was founded in the medieval city and has been a short-stay favourite for a handful of our kings and queens. It’s no surprise, therefore, there it also houses residents that stay longer for 2 nights and a full English breakfast.
In 2007, a torso – yep, just a torso – was seen by the fireplace in the middle of the dinner rush. And with this uninvited guest, a ghostly young girl is often witnessed here.
Our next pub (The White Hart) is also pretty damn old, and is believed to date back to 1674. But its history has had a much more striking impact on its paranormal activity: it is reported that 2 brothers had a brawl over financial matters in the pub, and the murdered brother is said to stick to his place of death. This often crops up in terms of orbs on the CCTV.
Although these previous pubs won’t be sending too many shivers down your spine, prepare yourself for our final visit in this crawl: Llandoger Trow.
Built 10 years prior to the White Hart, it is founded on the rumours of pirates and tunnels hidden within the secret history of the South West. It’s even been the inspiration for fictional characters that likely would’ve fit in as frequenters of this pub, but what really matters here aren’t the characters trapped within the pages of a book.
15 ghosts allegedly haunt this pub.
And it’s no surprise that the team behind the TV show Most Haunted have even reflected on this rather cramped location!
The most notable resident here is Little Pierre, a young disabled boy, who is often heard upstairs either pulling himself across the floor and sobbing, or limping.
Da streetz, bruv (this is humour, right?)
It goes without saying that to get to these haunted pubs so you can order your pint and wait for the paranormal, you have to, you know, get there. And to get there you have to walk some of Bristol’s spookiest streets.
First up is All Gallows Lane, which isn’t giving out any good vibes from the outset. One of its junctions is reportedly haunted by a highwayman known as Jenkins Protheroe. When he was caught in the 18th century, he was hung for his crimes, explaining the name behind this road.
And the executions don’t stop here; the Christmas Steps might have a jolly name, but the circumstances of this location are less so. Back in the 1660s, this was a famous location for Gallows, and people still claim they can hear a man screaming where the victims used to meet their ends.
The Theatres
If you’re looking for an evening of fine dining, and perhaps even to take in a show, you won’t go a miss here, whether your heading down to the Odeon, or even looking to rewatch Wicked for the umpteenth time.
And if youre really looking for an immersive experience, Bristol is the place to go: the Old Vic Theatre – as Britain’s oldest theatres – has its fair share of long standing residents. And it’s the theatre manager from an odd 200 years ago that won’t quite quit her post: shes often seen lingering around the front desk area (good customer service never gets old, dear reader), and has even been followed out of the building, only to disappear into thin air.
The local cinema also is a phantom favourite, with a murdered manager turning up in the third row occasionally, or wandering down corridors. Cold spots and banging sounds have also added to his paranormal portfolio, and he’s got a good reason for doing so:
It’s the mid 1940s. Britain and the allies have nearly claimed victory in the war. Economic suffering is widespread, and the end doesn’t seem in sight. Oh, and then the manager of your local cinema gets shot in his office.
The guilty party was never found.
Perhaps he is still searching for him, wandering the cinema for the escaped assailant.
The Haunted Asylum
It’s a fan favourite, it’s a common cliché; the haunted asylum is the perfect avenue to erect pyschological thrillers for horror movie obsessives like me.
And it turns out Bristol has just this.
Dower House was once part of Stoke Park Hospital, and has seen no shortage of death and other dark things, but the major haunting cited for this location is that of Elizabeth Somerset.
In 1760, this seventeen year old fell from her horse and broke her neck, dying shortly after.
Walkers today still hear echoes of the horse galloping near the monument commemorating her short and fragile life.
Indeed, even the name of the building serves more to its paranormal purpose: traditionally, ‘dower house’ means the home of a widow, and a wealthy one of that.
And the creepy shit doesn’t stop there – it was in the 20th century that it was converted into the mental hospital that fulfils the trope we know and love (I take that back, I hate it, its cancelled, just nope).
The Clifton Suspension Bridge
Our penultimate supernatural site takes us to one of Britain’s architectural landmarks, and it’s the creation of this bridge – and, unfortunately, its melancholy usage – which leads us to our next rumoured hauntings.
The bridge’s designer – Isambard Kingdom Brunel – is often wandering around the areas that overlook the bridge, but this iconic top hatted figure is seldom the only ghost to haunt these parts.
As it is a bridge, it has become a hotspot for those that wish to take their own lives, and with rumours of dark silhouettes traipsing the area, and a young man hurrying through the woods towards the bridge, its difficult memories remain stuck to this location.
The Dock
It gave Bristol the fierce and famous history it still upholds, and had even been labelled by the crew of Most Haunted as one of their top 5 most haunted locations they’ve ever witnessed - the docks have earned their place in this post.
One of its most famous attractions – SS Great Britain – sees 150000 living visitors, yet those that don’t fit this criteria still find time to make this boat their home.
Residents include a sailor who fell from the rigging whilst working on the ship, or Mrs. Cohen, who passed away weeks after her wedding whilst on the ship. In 2005, for example, workers saw a woman make her way across the promenade deck just before the re-launch of the ship.
On board, or on the land, ghostly attractions are never a sight to be missed.

"hi, I'm not from the US" ask set
given how Americanized this site is, it’s important to celebrate all our countries and nationalities - with all their quirks and vices and ridiculousness, and all that might seem strange to outsiders.
[this post was originally by @slavicafire but I just copied and pasted it into my notes to make it easier to format]
for context, I'm from Scotland :))
1. favourite place in your country?
Lower Largo because its beautiful and I have so many memories of holidays there, or Edinburgh because I love how it goes from modern to ancient in the span of a few yards.
2. do you prefer spending your holidays in your country or travel abroad?
Scotland! I've never left the UK (and even then I've only left Scotland twice) so I definitely prefer spending my holidays here.
3. does your country have access to sea?
I live in the UK. yes. yes we do.
specifically I live on the east coast of Scotland and its pretty much beaches galore.
4. favourite dish specific for your country?
if you'd asked me this before January I'd have said mince and tatties, (haggis, minced meat and mashed potatoes) but I've been a veggie since January so my favourite native dish is probably either vegetarian haggis (which is pretty much oats and spices) or scotch broth (a soup that usually has lamb or beef in it but my family has always made it with only veg)
5. favourite song in your native language?
Maraiche by Nitework!! such a bop (I don't speak much Gaelic but scotland's only native languages are Scottish Gaelic and English so I figured I'd pick my favourite specifically Scottish song)
6. most hated song in your native language?
I think it would be a travesty to name a Scottish song and describe it as something I hate. but if we're talking about English being my native language, baby shark or anything by Justin beiber is immediately a BIG no in my book.
7. three words from your native language that you like the most?
anything in gaelic?? but if I had to narrow it down, it'd be "machair" (field), "jings" (not necessarily gaelic but it's a Scots word used to express surprise) or "seadh" (pronounced "sh-ugh" and means "yes").
8. do you get confused with other nationalities? if so, which ones and by whom?
Irish. unfortunately we don't get taught much about the complicated history Ireland has, so we don't learn about the troubles. I find myself struggling to remember that Northern Ireland is a part of the UK while the Republic isn't, etc.
9. which of your neighbouring countries would you like to visit most/know best?
Ireland for the reasons above :)
10. most enjoyable swear word in your native language?
bampot! it pretty much means "prick" and it's so fun to say. try it!
11. favourite native writer/poet?
I feel like people expect me to say rabbie (Robert) burns but honestly, iain crichton smith or norman maccaig are my favourite scottish poets. I don't really have a fav Scottish writer (but I do recommend Ian Rankin's "a question of blood"!)
12. what do you think about English translations of your favourite native prose/poem?
oh my GOD if I see another English translations of Scots poems (like Rabbie Burns poems) I will combust. they're written in Scots/Gaelic for a reason! please don't put them into English because they completely lose their meaning!!
13. does your country (or family) have any specific superstitions or traditions that might seem strange to outsiders?
hogmanay (new years eve celebrations) or the highland games are weird concepts to people who aren't Scottish. my cousins are English and celebrate hogmanay with us even if they don't understand it, and they love the Highland games, but in England they have nothing like that.
14. do you enjoy your country’s cinema and/or TV?
TV? not really. River city is probably the most famous example and I don't enjoy it. but still game and chewin' the fat are iconic and I fucking love them. film? sign me the fuck up, I love a good Scottish film. sunshine on leith? trainspotting? highlander? the angels share? brilliant! poetic cinema!
15. a saying, joke, or hermetic meme that only people from your country will get?
yer da, yer da, yer da sells Avon! yer maw, yer maw, yer maw punts coonsil!
16. which stereotype about your country you hate the most and which one you somewhat agree with?
I hate the stereotype that we're all ginger and love booze. that's not always the case. e.g. I've got light brown/dark blonde (???) hair and so does my sister (but my mum has ginger hair so that kind of defeats my argument)
I agree with the one that football fans are angry. have you ever seen a celtic and a rangers fan get along? nope.
17. are you interested in your country’s history?
yes!! unfortunately if its not a war you don't get taught about it in school so there's a lot of things I don't know. what I do know is that the town I used to live in was the old capital of my county (my county is Fife and the old capital was a place called Dalgynch at the time, but now Markinch. the capital of Fife now is dunfermline.)
18. do you speak with a dialect of your native language?
i speak in a fife/Scots dialect depending on who I'm with. if I'm with family it's very fifer/Scots with a wee bit of glaswegian/doric (aberdonian) slang chucked in there, but if I'm with my friends it's toned down scots because a lot of them come from what I call 'posh' backgrounds and don't really understand slang all that well.
19. do you like your country’s flag and/or emblem? what about the national anthem?
fuckin love it!!!!! the saltire fills me with so much pride and the lion rampant (the yellow and red one, not the white and green one) is beautiful. I love 'o flow'r of scotland' as well!!! a beautiful song that makes me very nostalgic for absolutely no reason.
20. which sport is The Sport in your country?
either rugby, football or golf. all fairly popular.
21. if you could send two things from your country into space, what would they be?
haggis and buckfast! gies me the boak (makes me feel sick). the world would be a better place without them tbh
22. what makes you proud about your country? what makes you ashamed?
the people make me proud and ashamed. proud because we're mostly lovely. ashamed because of the football fans who hurl sectarian abuse at each other at the old firm (rangers vs celtic) games. (sectarianism in scotland is Catholic v protestant pretty much but its not a big thing unless you're a football fan, unlike me)
23. which alcoholic beverage is the favoured one in your country?
loads of people love buckfast (it's like a tonic wine) but I cannot get behind it. desgustang. loads of people like proper Scottish whiskey as well, distilled in the Highlands. can't say I do as I've never tried it, but it smells nice and I can certainly see the appeal.
24. what other nation is joked about most often in your country?
England! Scotland and England have a very... complicated rivalry.
25. would you like to come from another place, be born in another country?
I'd have loved to have been born in the outer hebrides (said "heh-bri-dees") because the islands up north are fucking stunning. especially north uist.
26. does your nationality get portrayed in Hollywood/American media? what do you think about the portrayal?
we often get portrayed as angry alcoholics, which I hate. but some have gotten it right, which I love.
27. favourite national celebrity?
James mcavoy or Ian mcgregor. sound dudes!
28. does your country have a lot of lakes, mountains, rivers? do you have favourites?
yep! Loch lomond and Loch Shiel are definitely 2 of my favs
29. does your region/city have a beef with another place in your country?
England.
30. do you have people of different nationalities in your family?
yep! I have English cousins but the majority of my family are Scottish, born and bred.

Heathrow Airport Transfer is now going to be more fun from the new Terminal 5 at Heathrow Airport.
This is the UK's brand-new flagship airport transfer terminal built for 21st Century travel. Opened by the Her Majesty The Queen a few days ago, terminal 5 is available for air passenger transport since 27th March 2008.This terminal is being used solely by British Airways from June 2008 as they will move out of terminal 1 and 4 completely (after they have streamlined their current baggage handling hiccups). This will mean that all of BA customers will be able to enjoy super fast track check-in and security clearance and be able to board their flight within minutes instead of hours in the Summer.
Also applicable to incoming BA flight passengers is the great speed of exiting the terminal after landing with your baggage. You should be able to exit the terminal within 15 minutes of landin at Terminal 5 with express customs clearance. At terminal 5 the planes actually allow the passengers to disembark right by the terminal instead of hundreds of yards away. In addition the automation and staff set up will mean fast track clearance of all incoming travelers into terminal 5.
If you need a London Airport transfer we strongly recommend that you book your car or minibus before you arrive at the airport, as the airport taxis will charge you a fortune for excess luggage if you have any. For your transport requirements in London, you have a large range of vehicles to choose from such as top of the range 3/4 seat Mercedes sedans, 8 seat stretch limos, 16 seat minibus and super long body Navigator Limousines, 34 seat coaches and also 53 seat coaches as well.

When you pick an estblished hire company, they will also be able to assist you with you tours in London and the rest of the UK.

Getting Started with Shakespeare
So you want to get into Shakespeare.
I was chatting with a friend of mine recently, who said he’d quite like to get into Shakespeare as an adult, without the pressure of having to study for an exam. I feel like now, having finished my Classical Studies and English degree, and having written my dissertation on Shakespeare, I am at least vaguely qualified to give advice on the subject. Maybe you’re about to start your degree and haven’t read much Shakespeare before, or you might be at school and struggling to get to grips with the language, or maybe, like my friend, you’re just curious. Whichever applies, this advice is for you. Throughout this post, I’ve also attached links to handy info and resources.
Go see some Shakespeare performed
Me with William Shakesbear on a trip to the RSC, Birmingham UK, 2017
As you know, Shakespeare’s plays were designed to be performed, not read. With the benefit of actors actually standing in front of you acting the play out, the early modern English is much easier to understand. There are lots of ways to absorb some Shakespeare without destroying your bank balance. If you live in a city, there’s a decent chance you have a local theatre company who will put on a Shakespeare production once or twice a year. During the summer you can also check our your local parks and botanical gardens for outdoor performances. If you live in the UK and can travel, the Royal Shakepeare Company and National Theatre provide £5-7.50 tickets for under-25s, and Shakespeare’s Globe do £5 tickets for those willing to stand. If none of this is available to you, you can also go and see RSC and NT performances streamed live to your local cinema, or check out Digital Theatre, which is like Netflix for theatre.
But what if I want to read Shakespeare?
Reading Shakespeare is a challenge even if you’re experienced, but there are ways to make it easier for yourself. When you’re getting starte, it might be your first instinct to buy a great big full works of Shakespeare with all of his plays and poems inside. Whilst these are super handy to have on hand for reference, they aren’t practical for reading full plays from, as they’re importable and tend to have really dense columns of text. Buying individual plays may seem less cost effective, but it’s a much more practical way to read them. The Oxford School Shakespeare editions come with handy ‘translation’ notes in the margins, which can help clarify some of the language. My favourite editions, however, are the Arden ones, as they provide a tonne of contextual info, such as historical background, performance history, and source text material.
Should I read a comedy first?
Comedy’s seem like the natural first choice for getting started with anyone’s work. You’d probably assume that they’d be lighter, more entertaining, and less dense. Whilst that isn’t necessarily untrue, comedies can be really hard to follow on the page, and a lot of the humour is lost to the centuries unless brought back to life by an actor. Shakespeare’s comedies tend to be full of disguises, cross-dressing and crossed-wires, which can often make them a puzzling read. I recommend starting with a tragedy. They’re usually a little more straightforward in their plots and a bit easier to follow. They’re also, as a general rule, better plays, in my opinion anyway. I’d personally recommend starting with Julius Caesar or Macbeth, because there’s a reasonable chance you’re already vaguely familiar with their plots. There’s also no shame in Sparknotes-ing plot summeries if you’ve lost your bearings.
Learn some background!
We’re currently experiencing a huge podcast boom, which means there are loads of opportunities to learn about all kinds of things for free. Whilst there are some fabulous books out there by writers such as Stephen Greenblatt, James Shapiro and Antony Sher, it’s hard to know where to start, and you might not want to commit to big book purchases only to find you’ve bought a dry slab of academic jargon you can’t bear to wade through. Podcasts provide a handy way of absorbing info in digestable hour-long chunks. My two favourites at the moment for Shakespeare are the Telegraph and RSC’s Much Ado About Shakespeare cast and Cassidy Cash’s That Shakespeare Life. In Much Ado About Shakespeare, Ben Lawrence explores Shakespeare’s place in our modern world looking into the background of the plays as well as interviewing theatre practicioners and experts about current productions and film adaptations.. If you’re wondering why Shakespeare’s work continues to thrive, this podcast is for you. Cassidy Cash, in her podcast That Shakespeare Life, explores the world of Shakespeare, talking to academics about everything from the actor Richard Burbage, to the food Shakespeare would have eaten. Learning more about Shakespeare’s world will help you make more sense of his work!
If you’d like to hear more of my thoughts on Shakespeare please do get in touch!

Atomy
South Korean cosmetics company is making a major push into Britain, and claims that those who sign up to be a sales representatives can earn thousands in commission each week, and bonuses of up to £720,000.
Founded in 2009, Atomy has become one of the world’s biggest “multilevel marketing” (MLM) companies – where individuals make money by selling items and getting people to sign up – and claims to have 15 million members globally.
After launching in the US, Canada, Australia and other territories, it has set its sights on the UK and Europe, and says tens of thousands of people have already signed up.
It is the latest in a line of direct-sales beauty companies likely to particularly attract women who may be struggling financially and looking for new ways of earning cash – a trend that has been accelerated by the pandemic.
The company’s launch videos and promotional material emphasise the large sums it says can potentially be earned as a “distributor” – including, for those who reach the top of the programme, six-figure cash bonuses and perks, such as a personal assistant and personal driver.
MLM schemes are typically made up of large numbers of people selling items such as beauty and cleaning products, candles and books, from home. They are controversial, and in the UK there are scores of individuals and groups campaigning against them on social media.
Campaigning group Hey Hun... #BanTheScam claims MLM is a “predatory business model” that should be banned, and is planning a protest in central London on 28 August.
Meanwhile, another critic of this type of scheme told the Observer that, in his opinion, Atomy was an “economic cult”. However, there is no evidence that any UK authorities are investigating MLMs.
Critics have labelled them “pyramid schemes”, but Atomy denies this. It describes itself as “a consumer-oriented network marketing company”, adding that people can join for free, with no obligation to sell products, and that the vast majority of its customers are “consumer-only” – that is, not earning commission from sales. It held its official launch event at the New Theatre Royal in Portsmouth on 28 July.
The UK company is called Atomy Distribution. It has an office in Guildford and plans to hold seminars where people can find out more about this “business opportunity”.
It specialises in beauty and skincare products and health supplements, and says it is offering people the chance to become their own boss and earn additional income by becoming a distributor.
In its video message to potential recruits, it claims that through its compensation plan, “you will be able to fulfil all the dreams in your life scenario”.
In simple terms, members earn points from their personal purchases and from purchases made by their “legs” – that is, the team of customers they have recruited as members.
Points then translate into commission and other payments.
Before you can start earning commission, you need a minimum number of personal points, plus those for each of your legs.
However unlike some similar companies, members buy from an online “shopping mall”, not from another distributor. This means that distributors do not have to hold, and pay for, stock that they may never manage to sell.
Atomy has five levels of sales rep, called “dealerships,” and seven “masterships”, each with its own rules.
There is a complex system of commission payments, bonuses and other incentives.
In one video, Ruby McGrath, the UK and Europe managing director, says that in terms of general commission, distributors get a “score” for reaching each dealership, and each score is “roughly about” five US dollars. “The maximum score you can earn per day is 300,” she adds. This suggests a maximum of $1,500 (£1,080) commission a day.
Then there are the mastership bonuses, described as “once-in-a-lifetime” awards for reaching each level. Those reaching the lowest rung receive some company products, while Atomy claims those reaching the top rung, known as “imperial master” status, would receive £720,000 cash, plus other benefits including “office rental, personal assistant and driver hire”.
To join, an individual must provide the membership number of the person who is referring them.
Atomy’s website says it offers more than 400 products, although last week the shopping mall on the UK site appeared to list a smaller range, from £5 for four tubes of toothpaste to £180 for the “Absolute Skincare Set”.
The UK launch film on YouTube includes a sequence where the company bosses take afternoon tea with “a very special guest” – who turns out to be a lookalike of the Queen. The lookalike flicks through an Atomy brochure while drinking tea and eating sandwiches on the terrace of a stately home, and is then delighted to be presented with a basket of the company’s products.
The UK trade body for the direct sales sector, the Direct Selling Association (DSA) – whose members include cosmetics company Avon and the health and beauty firm Amway – estimates there are 631,000 direct sellers in the UK, 96% of whom are female. The DSA is an association controlled by its members, and operates a code of conduct with which they have to comply.
The Observer asked the DSA if it was aware of Atomy UK and whether it had applied for membership. It replied that “this company is not known to us”.
The DSA has said, in the past, that while multilevel marketing structures “may seem similar to pyramid schemes,” – which are illegal in the UK – “in reality they are substantially different and are more similar to a conventional corporate business model”.
The US-based Direct Selling News website recently published a “Global 100” list of direct sales companies which featured Amway in first place and Atomy at 12. The site said that in 2020, Atomy’s annual revenue was $1.48bn (£1.06bn).
David Brear, who describes himself as an author who has studied cults, told the Observer that, in his opinion, Atomy was an “economic cult” that was peddling a “cruel illusion”.
However, McGrath says that “you don’t have to be a distributor member to enjoy Atomy’s products,” and that “97% of our customers are consumer-only (ie, non-commission earning)”.
She adds: “Our members love our products and recommend them to people to try … there is no pushing people to buy, no joining fee, no stock holding, no minimum requirement to purchase any products.
“Additionally, unlike other network marketing companies, our consumers purchase via the online shopping mall, not via a person.”
McGrath says that of the $1,500 maximum commission a day that “reaching this level takes a lot of hard work and dedication. Typically, for someone to make Atomy their full-time job, we would say it takes over three years of dedication and hard work”.
She added that Atomys was “looking into” applying to join the DSA.
